76 in the Shade

If anyone's struggling with the heat, a really good lo-fi hack:

  • If it's warmer outside than inside, keep the windows shut

  • If it's warmer inside than out, open the windows

  • Two windows open forming a 'corridor' where the wind passes through creates the best breeze

  • Block all light from coming in. Carboard, sofa cushions, spare curtains, get them all over the windows when the sun shines on them.

  • Monitor your house throughout the day to get windows opened/closed/covered at the right times

I'm really satisfied by how well this is going in our home!

If you are early risers, open all the windows in the house while the sun hasn't reached full strength. Close them and all shutters/curtains as soon as the sun begins to gather itself.

Sprinkle water on your bed sheets.

When the sun begins to set, fill a shallow tub with water and soak your feet in it to cool your core.

Use the stove as little as possible -- cold meats, canned goods, cold sandwiches and fruit are the rule of the day.
