29 April 2020 12:28Litter-picking has been a cornerstone of my spirituality for many years; so much so that when my mentor takes his carved crow staff, and my husband his tall oak quarterstave, I walk along side them with one of those grabby litter-picking sticks. I'm going to put some symbols and ribbons on it.
So one of the biggest, sucky things about the covid is that its really not safe to do this. Perhaps, in the future, I'll get some surgical gloves, when there's less of a shortage; and when the local binmen aren't struggling to maintain their numbers.
What am I replacing it with? It's difficult. One thing I'm looking into is learning and uprooting non-native plants - we have a lot of rhodedendron around here. It's a kind of direct action, where you're just doing te thing that needs to be done and taking personal responsibility for the space around you. Another thing I've been thinking about is planting - there are some areas near here which I could plant with meadowseeds, like neglected bits of estate. This, I'm waiting for local charities to begin selling seeds again: I want to ensure I'm doing this with proper native seed too. More broadly, I'd like to learn forest stewardship, like, I could go out into the natural places and "garden" there in ways which increase biodiversity and forest flourishing. I want a proper tuition on that, however, so it isn't just me making things worse.
