"No one got upset when bicycles turned up; no one said, oh god this is ruining society" - not to nitpick something that's irrelevant to the argument of the piece, but I'm pretty sure they *did* get weird about the bike, and esp when women started using them. As a Victorian slipped out of time, I think I have come across this in my reading!

I am not sure if they got weird about bicycles, but they definitely got weird about women having to wear trousers to ride bicycles and refusing to be dissuaded from riding bicycles
