Watching the new Queer Eye and...

1) Someone needs to introduce straight-makover-dude Tom to daddy/bear culture because I would def go on a date with Tom.

2) Wow I have more internalised homophobia than I thought I did; I am really aware of my discomfort and I guess even fear, like an anticipation that they're going to camp it up too far and get smacked back for it.

3) Some vague percolating thoughts about working class culture being a good fit for gay culture. The concept of the show is fish-out-of-water/meeting-of-opposites, as a gay style team make over a straight bloke - and this season is set in rural Georgia. Which you'd assume would be homophobia hell. But there's some big overlaps with friendliness and outgoingness and relaxedness - overlaps you wouldn't see in an urban middle class mileu, which is always awkward/uncomfortable/uptight af. I get this impression that everyone in the show is vibing off a similar sense of enthusiasm and passion and open-ness, and that's more than enough to cross the cultural bridge of sexuality. Something you almost certainly *wouldn't* get if the team had been sent to an area with a "liberal, tolerant" reputation.

(I';ve only watched half of one episode and must stress this idea is very vague indeed, esp in the context of American culture as a non-American)
